There’s a thread that you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.
-William Stafford
When we lose track of direction and priorities, life can be difficult. But if we look closely, we find that there is a thread that runs through our lives giving us direction, passion and power. In my coaching work, I call this a Life Purpose.
Your life purpose is a unique description of what you were put on this earth to do and be. I help clients identify their life purpose to give their life clarity and focus. It helps them prioritize, make decisions and face life’s challenges more effectively.
What is the thread that runs through your life? What thread do you follow?
The poem, The Way It Is, certainly rings true for me. I have just finished reading James Hillman’s last book, The Force of Character and the Lasting life. He is the author of the better known book, The Soul’s Code. It is clear that the thread that runs through my life, my character, takes the shape of social justice in the world. It is based in a deep sense of repulsion at unfairness and oppression. His claim is that Character requires the additional years. He claims that the last years confirm and fulfill character. I find myself looking forward to what this will mean for me as I move toward my 80’s.
Jim,
Thanks for sharing this. One’s Life Purpose is crucial to the character you form. If you stay true to your purpose, it serves to build your character.
Dear Deb,
Articulating my Life Purpose has been crucial in shaping my priorities and enhancing my self-esteem. Thank you for creating a forum to discuss and reflect.
Love,
Toni
Toni,
Can you say more about how it has been valuable.
Love,
Deb
Dear Deb,
When I find myself faced with a task, I remind myself of my Life Purpose and frame the task accordingly. This is especially helpful with requisite “drudge” work. Previously, “druge” work was often depressing; with my Life Purpose front-and-center, it’s a joy.
Love,
Toni
