“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence,
it is self-preservation, and that
is an act of political warfare.”- Audre Lorde
In the face of today’s state of the world, many women I know are either giving in to negativity and hopelessness, or working nonstop at their own expense to make the world a better place.
Both giving in to negativity and hopelessness, and not engaging in self-care, leave us unable to do the work we were put in the world to do.
How might you feel differently and treat your time differently if you saw staying hopeful and positive and engaging in self-care as an act of political warfare?
What will you do today to take care of yourself and find a piece of joy no matter how the elections turn out?
That Audre Lorde quote is the perfect definition for personal activism.
Hello Deborah. I can’t tell you how meaningful and how perfect the timing is to have received this message. I focus a lot on self-care by practicing Reiki and qigong almost on a daily basis, eating well and doing my best to instill this in others. That said sometimes I feel my work in wellness is trivial and perhaps unimportant given the state of the world and all the support for change that is needed. I do believe if we were all taking care of ourselves that this would lead to healthier bodies, minds, and souls – and that this could be a major contributing factor to helping the world heal and become a better place. So I thank you immensely for sending this out and reminding me that this is truly important. I will now continue with my mission to help people make their lives healthier and richer one bite, one step, one moment at a time.
