In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, I want to highlight the #SayHerName Campaign, which focuses on the need to call attention to police violence against Black women and women of color. This violence remains largely invisible and ignored in the media coverage of the #MeToo Movement, which has focused mainly on sexual assault and harassment allegations of well-known white, middle and upper-class women.

Author and activist Andrea J. Ritchie has responded to this invisibility with her book, Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color. This book documents the long history of police violence against women of color and bears witness to their untold stories.

Invisible No More is a chilling depiction of the reality of the social, economic, political and cultural systems that foster violence against women of color.

Those of us who are in privileged positions have to help shine light on, support, and give space these marginalized voices.
